Show The God - A Lesson From Jonah
When you hear the name Jonah, most of us immediately think of the “great fish” that swallowed him. But the story in Jonah 1 isn’t just about a fish. It’s about God’s call, Jonah’s rebellion, and a storm that changed everything. Jonah’s journey reveals powerful lessons about God’s mercy, obedience, and how our actions impact others. Let’s break it down together.

1. God’s Call and Jonah’s Fear
Jonah was a prophet, chosen by God to deliver a message to Nineveh, a wicked and brutal city. Instead of obeying, Jonah ran in the opposite direction, boarding a ship to Tarshish which was 2,500 miles away from where God wanted him to go. Why? Fear, resentment, and possibly a lack of faith. How often do we react the same way when God calls us to step out of our comfort zone?

  • God may call us to confront tough situations or reach out to those we struggle to love.
  • Jonah’s story reminds us that running from God only leads to turmoil, but obedience leads to purpose.

2. The Storm: God’s Attention-Grabber
As Jonah fled, God sent a violent storm, shaking the ship and terrifying the sailors. Meanwhile, Jonah was asleep below deck, indifferent to the chaos his disobedience caused. The sailors, desperate for answers, cast lots, and the blame fell on Jonah. Jonah admitted his rebellion, offering to be thrown overboard to calm the storm.

  • Sometimes, life’s storms are wake-up calls, reminding us of areas where we’ve drifted from God.
  • Even in our rebellion, God’s discipline is an act of mercy, meant to draw us back to Him.

3. Witnessing in Unexpected Ways
Though Jonah resisted God’s call, his actions on the ship unintentionally pointed the sailors to the one true God. When they cried out to God for mercy and threw Jonah overboard, the sea calmed, and they worshipped the Lord. Jonah’s disobedience became a testimony of God’s power and mercy.

  • Our words and actions—even in difficult moments—can point others to Christ.
  • God can use our flaws and failures to bring others closer to Him.

4. Lessons for Us Today
Jonah’s story challenges us to reflect on our own lives. Are we running from God’s call? Are we avoiding a difficult task, a relationship that needs mending, or an opportunity to share His love? Here are three ways we can follow God’s example:

  • Show Compassion and Mercy: Just as God wanted Nineveh to repent, we are called to love those who seem far from Him.
  • Live with Integrity: Our daily actions—at work, home, or in the community—should reflect the God we serve.
  • Use Everyday Conversations: Like Jonah on the ship, God can use casual conversations to reveal His truth through us.

Be Bold and Obedient
Jonah’s story reminds us that no matter how far we run, God’s love and purpose pursue us. This week, step into His call with boldness. Reflect His mercy, live authentically, and trust Him to guide your steps. Even in our weakness, God can use us to shine His light in the lives of others.

Let’s stop running. Instead, let’s walk in faith, trusting that God’s plans are always for our good and His glory.
