Digging Deeper
Martha welcomed Jesus into her home and faithfully served Him. Her service was not the problem. Hospitality was a good thing, and caring for others is part of following Jesus. The issue was that her service had become filled with worry and distraction, causing her to miss what mattered most in that moment.
Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His teaching. Jesus affirmed her choice, reminding Martha that one thing was necessary. This passage reveals that Jesus is not simply looking for our activity, He desires our hearts and our attention.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to serve, love others, and help people follow Him. But our service must flow from our relationship with Christ, not replace it. We cannot pour into others what we are not allowing Jesus to pour into us.
Early in my walk with Jesus, I often focused more on working for Jesus than walking with Jesus. I wanted to serve, help, and do things for God, but I would become overwhelmed and lose sight of the One I was serving. I found myself repeating that cycle until I realized I needed to follow Mary’s example and return to the feet of Jesus.
There is something powerful about remembering that before Jesus calls us to do something for Him, He calls us to be with Him. When we spend time listening to His Word and allowing Him to shape our hearts, our service becomes an overflow of our relationship with Him rather than a replacement for it.

Set aside intentional time this week to be with Jesus without distractions. Read your Bible, pray, and ask Him to show you where busyness may be competing with your devotion to Him.

Jesus, help me not become so distracted by good things that I lose sight of what is most important. Teach me to sit at Your feet, listen to Your Word, and follow You faithfully. Shape my heart so that my service comes from a growing relationship with You. Help me become a faithful disciple who also helps others follow You. Amen.
