Jesus calls every believer to be a disciple who follows Him and a disciple-maker who helps others follow Him. Discipleship is not an optional part of the Christian life, it is the mission Jesus gave to His people.

Before reading any further, take a few minutes to open your Bible and read this passage. Pay attention to what it reveals about Jesus, His authority, His mission, and what it means to follow Him.
Digging Deeper
In Matthew 28, Jesus gives His followers a clear mission after His resurrection. He begins by declaring, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Before Jesus gives the command to make disciples, He reminds His followers who He is. Discipleship begins with the authority of Jesus. We do not make disciples because of our own wisdom, strength, or ability. We do it because Jesus has called us and has all authority.
Jesus commands His followers to “make disciples of all nations.” A disciple is someone who follows Jesus, learns from Him, and submits their life to His teaching. Jesus does not call His people to simply make converts or share information about Christianity. He calls them to help others become lifelong followers of Him.
Jesus explains that making disciples includes baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He has commanded. Discipleship involves bringing people into the family of God and helping them grow in obedience to Jesus. Spiritual growth is not meant to happen alone. God uses His people to encourage, teach, and strengthen one another.
This passage also reminds us that discipleship is not something we do in our own power. Jesus ends His command with a promise: “I am with you always.” The same Jesus who sends His followers into the world also promises His presence as they obey Him.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to keep growing in our relationship with Him while also helping others grow. We are not meant to simply receive biblical truth, we are called to live it out and pass it on.

Identify one person in your life who needs encouragement in their walk with Jesus. Take time this week to intentionally reach out, share something God is teaching you, ask how you can pray for them, or invite them into a conversation about following Jesus.

Am I actively helping others follow Jesus, or have I viewed discipleship as something only for pastors and church leaders?
🔥 Live on Mission
Look for one opportunity this week to invest spiritually in someone else. This could be through encouragement, prayer, sharing Scripture, or having a conversation about what Jesus is teaching you.
Discipleship grows when we are willing to take what Jesus has taught us and help others follow Him too.
🤲 Prayer
Jesus, thank You for calling us to follow You and for giving us the mission of making disciples. Help us grow as faithful disciples who obey Your Word and point others toward You. Give us courage, wisdom, and love as we encourage others in their faith. Help us remember that You are with us as we follow Your command. In your name I pray. Amen.
