The Problem Has To Go

2 Samuel 20, the Bible tells us about a man named Sheba who rebelled against King David and fled to the fortified city of Abel. Joab, the commander of David’s army, and his men surrounded the city because Sheba was hiding there.

While Joab’s men were battering the wall to bring it down, a wise woman from the city called out to Joab. She asked why he was about to destroy a city that was part of God’s people and reminded him that Abel was known as a peaceful and faithful city. Joab explained that he wasn’t there to destroy the city, but that he was looking for Sheba. He told her that he would withdraw from the city if Sheba was handed over.

The woman went back to the people, and they found Sheba, killed him, and threw his head over the wall. Joab and his army then left, and the city was spared.

It’s a strange and graphic account, but one thing that comes to mind is how easy it can be to hold onto something that is causing problems in our lives. Sometimes we know something isn’t good for us, but we keep protecting it because it’s familiar or because letting go is difficult.

Maybe it’s a habit, an attitude, a relationship, or something else God has been asking us to surrender.

Is there something you’re holding onto that you know needs to go?
