Colossians 3:5 calls us to put to death the sinful desires that once controlled our lives. Paul is not telling us to simply manage sin or hide it, but to actively turn away from it and refuse to let it rule us. Because we belong to Jesus, we are called to live differently.
We need to recognize what pulls us away from God and choose to surrender it to Jesus. We do not have to let temptation control us. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can turn away from sin and choose to live the new life Jesus has given us.
