🪏 Digging Deeper
Jesus teaches that discipleship is about more than gaining knowledge. It is about being transformed by Him. He says, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”
A disciple is someone who follows Jesus closely, learns from Him, and allows Him to shape their thoughts, actions, and character. Jesus is not just giving us instructions for better behavior. He is calling us into a relationship where we become more like Him.
The goal of discipleship is not simply becoming a better person or becoming more like the world around us. The goal is becoming like Christ. As we follow Jesus, we should continually ask ourselves, “Am I becoming more like Him?”
I constantly remind myself that the goal of following Jesus is becoming like Jesus. When I lose sight of that, it becomes easy to focus on things that pull me away from what God desires for my life. But when Christ remains the focus, He creates in me a hunger for the wisdom, truth, and transformation that can only come from Him.
As disciples of Jesus, we are not only called to grow ourselves, but also to help others grow. We help others follow Jesus by teaching His truth, modeling obedience, and encouraging them in their faith. But we cannot help others become like Christ if we are not allowing Christ to shape us first.
👣 Your Next Step
Choose one area of your life where you need to become more like Jesus. Spend time this week reading one of Jesus’ teachings in the Gospels and ask, “What does Jesus want me to believe, change, or obey?”
Then take one specific step of obedience based on what He teaches.
🤔 Pause & Reflect
Am I simply learning about Jesus, or am I allowing Jesus to transform me to become more like Him?
🔥 Live on Mission
Think of someone God has placed in your life who is also learning to follow Jesus. Encourage them this week by sharing something Jesus is teaching you, or spend time helping them take their next step in following Him.
Remember, disciples do not only grow for themselves. They grow so they can help others grow.
🤲 Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being our Teacher and Lord. Help us not just hear Your words, but obey them. Shape our hearts, our thoughts, and our actions so that we become more like You. Teach us to follow You faithfully and help us make disciples who grow in their relationship with You. Amen.
